In August 2012, your line sister, Cassandra,  answered the call to once again become our Chair but this time in planning for the 40th Anniversary of our beloved line in 2013.  A letter went out to line sisters in September announcing the effort to find out who was interested in participating and; to get some ideas on when, where and what they would like see planned. This was going to be an especially unique task since 2013 was also going to be the year we would be celebrating the 100th year of our beloved sorority, DELTA SIGMA THETA, Inc. and many Centennial activities had been planned.

The responses back from the New Birth 38 line sisters were positive with many who were not financial wanting to do something also in July during the time of Centennial Week in Washington, DC.  The NB38 Chair in selecting a Committee comprised it of Line Sisters who had offered to be on the Committee and with others who had asked to participate with on the Committee again from the 30th Anniversary.  Chaired by Cassandra Wilkinson Lighty, the NB38 40th Anniversary Commitee consists of Gretchen Bell Lawson, Stephanie Lyon, Sharon Jackson Bullock, Carliss Cooper McCain, Denise Adams, Debra Green, Marsha Morris Dunkin and Lauretta Williams Holliday. 

The group held its first meeting in Baltimore in October during Homecoming weekend and decided on the theme, NEW BIRTH 38: "FORTY & FABULOUS". They agreed to hold conference call meetings every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month and have continued to do so.  In December, line sisters were asked to complete and submit a questionnaire that would provide the Committee with the input it needed to move forward with any plans for July and October.  Thirty-two Line Sisters completed and responded, this was a GREAT Start! 

The Committee has and continues to sacrifice time out of their busy schedules to plan for a 40th Line Celebration that will bond us together again as we now approach our senior years. But trust me it will NOT be a time to celebrate how old we have become but how fabulous we still are and that means we are going to have some FUN!  It will be a special time to Praise GOD in celebrating the lives of "38" young women from Morgan State University, who chose the DELTA LIFE and despite all obstacles since are all still alive to tell our stories. 

So to the Line Sisters of NEW BIRTH 38, please support and commend   these nine ladies for their time and efforts, but let's reward them with yor cooperation towards making the 40th Anniversary Celebration of our line this year, a huge success and one that you each us will remember with a smile.

THE NB38 OUTREACH GOAL

The goal of your "NEW BIRTH 38 Anniversary Planning Committee" is to obtain 100% participation from all 38 of our Line Sisters. Whether that line sister attends an activity        in July, one or all proposed for October, any participation will be well received. The Committee has worked very hard to find, contact and get in record time 34 of your          line sisters to respond to our inquiries.

Of the 34,  thirty-three who have responded positively to participating, one  still              remains a work in progress; and although she has responded yes to participating through   Facebook, we need a mailing or email address for MARIAN ANDERSON GAITHU.  As for       the remaining 4, the Committee does need your help in locating and getting in contact         with them. The remaining four line sisters are as follows:

  • BARENDA MORRIS KIMBLE  (resides in Columbia, MD)                                                    Has not responded to telephone calls, no current email                                                                                                                          
  • ADRIANNE "Kitty" TAYLOR (no known whereabouts)                                                      Has a brother in Florida who has been slow to respond                                                                         
  • VALERIE "Bunny" BRAXTON FORD (no contact information)                                             Last known to reside & work in the Washington, DC metro area                             

The "NB38 Outreach Committee" asks that If you know of the whereabouts of 4 line           sisters above; or have a lead how we may find or get in touch with them, please                contact the "Outreach Lead" Coordinator, CARLISS, and provide her with that information.          

THE NB38 OUTREACH PLAN                                                                                                                                                                                                             After finding and contacting you, it is the responsibility of your "NB38 Outreach Leads"         to communicate and keep you actively involved in the planning process.  In order            provide the effective outreach necessary to include, maintain and solicit your   participation, each "Outreach Group"  is organized by geographic areas or by the states where the Lead resides.

The "NB38 Outreach Leads" consisting of five members from the NB38 Planning        Committee are to be your point of contacts throughout the planning process for our                "40th Line Anniversary Celebration." They are as follows:

GRETCHEN BELL LAWSON                                                                                                           Baltimore and Northern Maryland Area                                                                                                                                                        If you have already established a relationship with an "Outreach Lead" of another  geographic team to whom you already may feel comfortable communicating, reporting     and responding, of course you may continue maintaining that relationship.  But for        official planning purposes, each Line Sister will be associated with the "Outreach Lead"    who resides from the same geographic as you do. The "NB38 Outreach Leads" will be           your voice on the Committee.  They each have webpages under the Outreach Section          of our Website for you to make comment, make requests, to respond or to make            inquiries. Your "NB38 Outreach Leads" perform the following:        

  • Seek your input when it comes down to the Planning Committee making            decisions on proposed activities, apparel, organizing travel                                arrangements or in seeking volunteers to fill vacancies on subcommittees;
  • Remind you of pending deadlines Assist you when you have problems              completing the questionnaires and surveys online and encourage you                             to to get them submitted;
  • Will constantly remind you of deadlines as they approach and or when                        you fail to meet them;
  • Request your participation in upcoming activities as needed; Seek your           assistance to find, locate or contact line sisters that reside within your              geographic area  and;
  • Follow through on any responses that you have memorabilia or                         parphrenilia to contribute and present            

Please cooperate with your "Outreach Lead" when she does contact or act as a reminder     as it necessiates completing our outreach goals, making decisions to meet deadlines              and in planning for a successful and  40th Anniversary Celebration of our Line that is memorable.
