SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL LINE SISTERS WHO HELPED US IN RESPONDING TO THE MORGAN'S PRESIDENT, DAVID WILSON'S EMERGENCY APPEAL "TO KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE"

EMERGENCY APPEAL - KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE

Dear Alumni and Friends,

As you might have heard, tighter standards in the Parent PLUS Federal Loan Program, used by parents to help pay for college for their children, have caused reductions in enrollment at colleges and universities nationwide.  Even parents who previously qualified for the Parent PLUS loan program are now being denied loans.  HBCUs have been particularly hard hit because we serve a larger share of low and moderate income families who depend on federal loan programs to help pay for college. Many families of Morgan students are facing harsh economic realities and cannot go it alone.  Your urgent assistance is needed now, more than ever.

At Morgan, we’re hearing the cry campus-wide, “help me stay in school!”   Some 300 promising students are in jeopardy of having their academic schedules disrupted this fall because parent loan applications have been unexpectedly denied.

We have increased our counseling efforts to help students manage their financial affairs in ways that are more likely to help them avoid dropping out, and we’re working with the U.S. Department of Education to collectively help students with Parent PLUS loan issues.  But we need your help, too.

Reluctant as we were to come to you, we know that you would not want to see worthy students go without the resources they need to continue their education because of a lack of resources.

Our goal is to raise $300,000 by August 31st, and give each of the approximately 300 students who face circumstances beyond their control, a minimum $1,000 scholarship for immediate emergency assistance until changes can be made to federal student loan policies.

Everyone deserves the chance to be educated and to give back in ways that are positive and immeasurable to the health and well-being of our families and communities.

Please visit us at www.givetomorgan.com and click on making a contribution now, and make an immediate donation to the “Keep the Dream Alive Emergency Aid Fund” .

Remember no matter the reason you choose to give, your gift shows your commitment to the University, your connection to your classmates, and your dedication to today's and tomorrow's students.Gifts have already started to come.  Please join me in “Keeping the Dream Alive.”  Give now!

Kind regards,

David Wilson
President

APPEAL TO NEW BIRTH 38 LINE SISTERS

Recently one of our own DENISE "Dee Dee" ADAMS was elected as the 2nd Vice-President of the Morgan State University National Alumnae Association. One of her issues with African-American college graduates is that we leave and never give back to our schools. She wants to assist with engaging our alums to the right thing.  Maybe, by contributing to this appeal, Dee Dee says can act as a catalyst for others to donate on a yearly basis.  WE CAN DO THIS!!!"

We are asking that each line sister contribute at least $40 a piece by AUGUST 15th in responding to the President's Appeal. We would prefer if our donation which is tax deductible to be made collectively mailed in the form of a check or money order from our line; however, donations can be mailed individually. The Alpha Gamma President, Shaquayah McKenzie, is suggesting that in making the contribution whether it comes individually or from our line that we make it payable to Alpha Gamma Endowed Scholarship putting the Alpha Gamma Line of 1973 on the memo line of the check.   This way Morgan knows it is still a donation from Alpha Gamma Sorors.

Furthermore, our line sister ANDREA CUSTIS has said, she will match whatever our line contributes. She calculates there are 37 of us left and whether you plan to participate in October, you should want to make a contribution. Worse case scenario says the NB38 Planning Chair, if only the 27 identified as active participants each contribute $40, we can still reach our goal of $1000. Andrea's match will make our contribution $2,000.

PLEASE MAKE YOUR CHECK OR MONEY ORDER PAYABLE TO:

"Alpha Gamma Endowed Scholarship"

TO MAKE A DONATION as a Line, BY AUGUST 15th, please mail at least $40 to:

STEPHANIE LYON

15404 Brinton Way

Brandywine, MD  20613

Once we have collected your contributions, we will make our donation collectively from the NB38 checking account to the Alpha Gamma Chapter or directly from the account through the website link suggested in the President's Letter.

To Mail your Contribution Individually, mail to:

Alpha Gamma Chapter

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc

Morgan State University - P.O. Box 39307

Baltimore, MD  21212

Inquiries should be addressed to LYNN KNIGHT MIDDLETON, administrator of the Alpha Gamma Endowed Scholarship at ag2177@gmail.com.

A DONATION IN HONOR OF OUR DECEASED LINE SISTER,

BRENDA L. NICHOLS

THE SARCOMA FOUNDATION OF AMERICA http://www.curesarcoma.org/

Our Mission

The mission of the Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA) is to advocate for sarcoma patients by funding research and by increasing awareness about the disease. The organization raises money to privately fund grants for sarcoma researchers and conducts education and advocacy efforts on behalf of sarcoma patients.

Sarcoma is a cancer of the connective tissue (i.e., bones,

muscles, fat, nerves and tendons) that affects approximately

12,000 Americans each year.  In adults, sarcoma represents

one percent of all newly diagnosed cancers. It is more

prevalent among young adults and children, accounting for

about 15% of all pediatric cancers.

THE MORGAN ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP & GALA

MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY

NATIONAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

For twenty-eight years the MSU National Alumni Association (MSUNAA) has sponsored the Homecoming Gala on the Friday evening of Homecoming Weekend at Martins West.  All proceeds from the Gala that includes your $150 ticket have gone to MSU's Endowed Scholarship.  Based on your responses to the January questionnaire, it was our intention to make a contribution at the Gala this year on behalf of the New Birth 38 line in celebration of our 40th Anniversary.  Each line sister whether you attended the Gala or not was being asked to contribute $40 each.

During the occasion of our July Centennial, the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. shared in a leaflet included in our grab bags from the Meet in Greet that since its inception in 2009, due to the generous and ongoing contributions of the current and alumnae members and friends of Alpha Gamma, the scholarship has grown to over twenty six thousand dollars.  The Endowment was created to demonstrate Alpha Gamma's commitment to academic excellence through the establishment of a permanent scholarship.

The Alpha Gamma Chapter has the distinction of being one of three student organizations with a fully funded endowed scholarship and the only sorority on campus to achieve this goal. As a result each semester needy students receive scholarships in the name of Alpha Gamma Chapter; for each semester many students are also forced to suspend or end their academic careers due to financial need.  The goal is to increase the Endowment to fifty thousand dollars ($50,000,000) by the end of the year.  Donations could be made by groups (lines) or by individual Sorors.

However, since there has been an urgent and recent appeal from our school's President, as suggested above, the NB38 donation will be made by the August 31st deadline instead of any presentation during the Morgan Gala in October.

Overall there are 3 opportunities for each NB38 line sister to make a charitable donation of $40 or more, two will go towards the same cause.  It will be up to you whether you decide to give $40 in contributing as a line towards reaching the President's $300,000 goal; or in making a 2nd contribution of $40 to the Alpha Gamma Endowment Scholarship at the Gala.
